Selling scrap does not need to be complicated. Whether you are a contractor finishing a project, a workshop with leftover offcuts or a household clearing a storeroom, the same simple steps get you a fair price with less back and forth.
Know your material
Start by working out what you actually have. Scrap is priced by material, so a pile of "metal" is worth very different amounts depending on whether it is iron, aluminum or copper. A magnet is the quickest test: iron and most steel stick to it, while aluminum, copper and brass do not. Copper has a reddish colour, brass looks yellow, and aluminum is light and silver-grey.
Sort before you sell
Mixed loads are usually priced at the value of the cheapest material in them. Separating metals into simple piles is the easiest way to raise the price of your load.
- Keep iron and steel together.
- Put aluminum, copper and brass in their own piles.
- Keep batteries upright and away from everything else.
- Remove obvious rubbish such as wood, plastic and bags.
Photograph it clearly
Good photos let a buyer price your scrap without a site visit. Take two or three photos in daylight: one wide shot that shows the whole pile, and one or two close-ups of the main materials. If you can, put something familiar in the frame, such as a door or a car, so the size is easy to judge.

Send your photos with a short description: the materials, a rough quantity and your city and district. Mention anything that affects collection, such as a narrow street, an upper floor or heavy items that need lifting equipment. The clearer your message, the faster and more accurate the reply.
Collection day
Agree a time that suits you and make sure the scrap is reachable. Clear a path to the pile and let the driver know where to park. If there is a security gate or a building guard, tell them in advance so the truck is not kept waiting.
Getting paid
Confirm the price and the payment method before anything is loaded. The final amount normally depends on the confirmed weight and the condition of the material, so be present when the load is weighed and ask any questions at that point. Keep a record of the agreed price and the weight for your own files.
Following these steps takes only a few minutes, and it makes the whole sale faster, clearer and fairer for everyone involved.
