Knowing roughly how much your scrap weighs helps you describe it clearly and get a faster quote. You do not need a scale for a first estimate: a few rules of thumb are enough. The final price always depends on the confirmed weight, but a good estimate makes the conversation much easier.
Rules of thumb
The simplest way to estimate is to think about how big a vehicle you would need to carry the load.
- If it fits in the boot of a car, it is usually well under 500 kg.
- If it fills the bed of a small pickup, it is often in the range of a few hundred kilograms up to around one tonne, depending on the material.
- If it needs a medium truck, it is typically several tonnes.
- If it needs more than one truck or a large trailer, it is a big job and is often priced after a site visit.
Material changes everything
The same pile can weigh very different amounts depending on what it is made of. Solid steel and cast iron are dense and heavy. Aluminum is light, so a large pile may weigh less than you expect. Loose items such as air conditioners, cable drums or sheet metal take up a lot of space for their weight.
Typical weights (rough guide)
The figures below are approximate ranges for planning only. Actual weights vary with size, model and condition.
| Item | Approximate weight |
|---|---|
| Car battery | 12 to 25 kg each |
| Split AC outdoor unit | 25 to 50 kg each |
| Window AC unit | 30 to 60 kg each |
| Steel door with frame | 40 to 80 kg each |
| Small pickup load of mixed scrap | 300 kg to 1 tonne |
| Medium truck load of steel | several tonnes |
How to describe your load
When you ask for a quote, give the buyer three things: the main materials, your best estimate of the quantity, and how it is stored. For example: "About 20 window AC units and a pile of steel pipes, roughly one pickup load, on the ground floor." This is enough for a realistic first price.

If you are not sure, choose "Not sure" in the quote form and add a photo. A photo with something familiar in the frame, like a door or a car, is often more useful than a guessed number.
